ルーマニア語 leu は「ライオン」の意で、語源はラテン語 leo にさかのぼります。獅子の図柄で知られた貨幣名と結びついて通貨名になり、lion や leonine と同根。だから「レウ」はもともと「獅子」の名です。
Leu comes from Romanian leu, which originally meant "lion." It goes back to Latin leo, the same root behind English lion and leonine. The name later became attached to a coin associated with a lion design, and from there it became the name of the currency.
