Mastitis is a medical condition in which the breast or milk-producing tissue becomes inflamed, often because of infection. The word is used in medicine and farming, especially about breastfeeding women and dairy animals. It is a technical health term.

mastitis はギリシャ語 mastos「乳房」が、医学ラテン語で炎症を表す接尾辞 -itis と結びついた語です。mastectomy も同じ mast- を含み、語の核が「乳房の部位に起こる炎症」だと分かると意味がすっと定着します。
Mastitis comes from Greek mastos, meaning "breast," together with the medical suffix -itis, meaning "inflammation." The word was shaped in modern medical Latin and then passed into English scientific use. The same mast- root appears in mastectomy.
