Matins came into English through Old French matines from Latin matutinus, meaning "of the morning." That Latin word is linked to Matuta, the Roman goddess of dawn. Because the service was said very early in the day, the word became the name of the church prayer for dawn or before dawn. A related English word is matinee, which also keeps the idea of morning or early day.
