A messiah is a promised or expected savior who will deliver a people or bring a better age, especially in a religious tradition. The word may also describe, sometimes critically, someone regarded as a great rescuer or leader.

ヘブライ語 māšīaḥ（油を注がれた者）が語源で、アラム語を経てギリシャ語 Messias となった。ギリシャ語訳が Christos（キリスト）であり、両者は同義。「油注ぎ」は古代の王の即位儀式に由来し、救世主の意味に発展した。
Messiah comes ultimately from Hebrew mashiach, meaning “anointed one,” through Aramaic and Greek Messias. Anointing with oil was associated with appointing kings and other chosen figures, so the title developed a religious sense referring to an expected deliverer. Greek Christos, the source of Christ, is a translation with the same basic meaning, “anointed.” The later figurative use extends the idea of deliverance to nonreligious rescuers.
