Mystifying describes something that is very confusing or difficult to understand. It is used when a person, event, or idea seems strange in a way that makes people puzzled.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
mystifying は、まず mystery（ミステリー）を思い出すと入りやすい語です。mystery が「謎」なら、mystifying は「人を謎の中に置いてしまうような、理解しにくい」という感覚。形は mystify（困惑させる）+ -ing で、「困惑させる性質のある」という作りです。confusing に近いですが、mystifying のほうが「理由や仕組みが見えず不思議で不可解」という響きが強め。a mystifying decision, a mystifying smile のように「見ても腑に落ちないもの」によく使います。
The easiest hook is `mystery`. If something is `mystifying`, it feels so hard to understand that it becomes like a mystery. It is close to `confusing`, but `mystifying` has a stronger sense of strange and hard to explain.

mystifying は mystify + -ing。mystify はフランス語 mystifier を経て、ギリシャ語 mystes『秘儀の入門者』にさかのぼり、mystery や mystic も同根。『秘密の中に入れられて見通せない』感覚から『不可解な』になった。
Mystifying comes from mystify plus the ending -ing. Mystify came through French and goes back to Greek mystes, meaning a person initiated into secret rites; mystery and mystic share the same root. The sense developed from something hidden or secret to something that is hard to understand.
