nosingはnose「鼻」+ -ing。noseは古英語nosu、さらにゲルマン祖語*nuso-、印欧祖語*nas-「鼻」へさかのぼる。そこから「鼻で探る」感覚で「嗅ぎ回る・詮索する」となり、関連語にnostril, nozzleがある。
