idler は idle + -er で、idle は古英語 idel「空の・むだな」に由来する。idleness や idly も同根で、核にあるのは“何も詰まっていない空白”の感覚だから、働かずぶらぶらする人を指す語になった流れがつかみやすい。
Idler is built from idle + -er. Idle comes from Old English idel, meaning "empty," "useless," or "vain," and the same root appears in idleness and idly. The sense moved from something empty or unfilled to a person who does no useful work.
