ナツメグ

解説 Definition

nutmeg はナツメグという香辛料のことです。日本語のカタカナ語「ナツメグ」とほぼ同じ意味で、料理や菓子の香りづけに使われます。

Nutmeg is a warm, aromatic spice made from the seed of the nutmeg tree. It is used, usually in small amounts, to flavor sweet and savory foods, including cakes, drinks, sauces, and soups.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

日本語の「ナツメグ」と同じ香辛料名ですが、英語では nutmeg /ˈnʌtmeɡ/ と発音します。語の成り立ちは「木の実」と「ムスクのような香り」に結びつきます。add a little nutmeg、grated nutmeg のように、スープ、焼き菓子、祝日の料理へ少量加えて温かい香りを付ける場面で覚えます。

The Japanese loanword ナツメグ points to the same spice, but remember the English pronunciation /ˈnʌtmeɡ/. Its historical formation evokes a strongly scented “nut,” which suits the hard seed that is grated into food. Learn it through kitchen combinations such as add a little nutmeg, grated nutmeg, and a pinch of nutmeg. Picture adding only a small amount to soup, cake, or a holiday drink: nutmeg has a warm, sweet aroma, but its flavor can become overpowering if too much is used.

例文

Add a little nutmeg to the soup.

She bought fresh nutmeg for the holiday recipe.

彼女は祝日の料理のために新鮮なナツメグを買いました。

nutmeg の語源・成り立ち Etymology

中英語nutmegは、古オック語 noz muscada にさかのぼり、noz はラテン語 nux「木の実」、muscada は「麝香の香りのする」です。つまり「ムスクのように香る木の実」で、香りの強い香辛料名になったと分かります。関連語は musk, muscat です。

Middle English nutmeg came through medieval French forms ultimately associated with Old Occitan noz muscada. The first element descends from Latin nux, meaning “nut,” while the second means “musky” or “musk-scented.” The name therefore described an aromatic, nutlike seed with a fragrance compared to musk. English later reshaped the first part transparently as nut, producing the modern spelling nutmeg.
