objectification はラテン語 ob-「前へ」+ jacere「投げる」に由来する object を土台に、-ify「…化する」+ -cation が付いた語です。project や reject も同じ語根の仲間で、人を『目の前に置かれた物』として扱う感覚が、客体化の意味につながります。
Objectification comes from object, plus -ify and -cation. Object goes back to Latin ob- "in front of" and jacere "to throw," so its early sense was something "thrown before" the mind or eyes; related words include project and reject. From there, objectification came to mean treating a person like a thing placed before you, rather than as a full human being.
