天文学用語で、ある天体が別の天体の前を通過してそれを隠す現象。月が恒星を隠す場合や、小惑星が別の天体の前を通過する場合などが該当する。
Occultation is the event of one object being hidden by another object passing in front of it. It is most often used in astronomy, such as when a planet or the moon blocks something from view. The word can also be used more generally for any complete covering.

occult を『オカルト』だけでなく『隠れた・見えない』の感覚で押さえると記憶しやすいです。-ation は現象・出来事を作る名詞語尾なので、occultation は直感的に『隠れる現象』。天文では eclipse のような特定の食だけでなく、月や小惑星が手前を通って星を見えなくする場面にも使います。transit は前を横切って見えること、occultation は横切って相手を隠すこと、と対比すると混同しにくくなります。
Use `occult` in its older sense of "hidden" or "concealed," not only the modern idea of strange magic. Then `-ation` turns it into an event or process, so `occultation` is a hiding event. In astronomy, it helps to compare it with `transit`: a transit crosses in front, but an occultation hides what is behind. That contrast makes the word easier to keep.

occultation は occult + -ation で、ラテン語 occultatio「隠すこと」に由来し、oc-/ob-「覆って」+ celare「隠す」へさかのぼります。occult や conceal と同根なので、天体が別の天体を隠す現象だと分かると、掩蔽の意味が直感的です。
Occultation comes from occult plus -ation, and it ultimately goes back to Latin occultatio, meaning "a hiding." The Latin root is related to celare, "to hide," which also appears in conceal. The meaning developed into the idea of one heavenly body being hidden by another.
