自分に向けられていない会話や情報を、意図せずたまたま耳にすることを表す動詞。こっそり聞こうとするというより、その場にいて聞こえてしまうという偶然性が中心で、会話の一部を耳にした場合にも使える。
To overhear means to hear something by chance, without planning or trying to listen. It usually refers to hearing part of another person's conversation. The word often suggests that the speaker was not meant to be heard.

まず hear「聞こえる」を土台に置く。listen が「自分から注意して聞く」、eavesdrop が「盗み聞きする」なのに対し、overhear はその中間ではなく、「自分向けではない会話が、その場にいたせいで耳に入る」という偶然性が中心。overhear a conversation, overhear someone say that ... がよく出るので、「秘密や本音をたまたま耳にしてしまう場面」と一緒に覚えると定着しやすい。

Overhear goes back to Old English oferhieran, made from over- and hear. The original picture is of sound coming over to someone who was not the intended listener. From that, the word developed the sense of hearing something by accident, especially another person's words.
