道路が交差する場所で、一方の道路が別の道路の上を高く架けられた橋のこと。交通を円滑にするために建設される。
An overpass is a bridge that carries one road over another road, railway, or similar route. It is commonly seen in cities, highways, and large traffic systems. In everyday use, it refers to the raised part that lets traffic pass above without crossing at ground level.

over + pass で「上を通って越える道」と捉えると覚えやすい語です。pass はまず「通る」、over は「上に・上を越えて」。つまり overpass は、道路や線路の上をまたいで通す道や橋。対になる語は underpass で、こちらは下をくぐる通路です。highway overpass, cross an overpass などの形で見かけやすく、「交差点そのもの」ではなく、立体交差で上側を通る構造物を指すと整理すると定着します。

overpass は英語 over「上を越えて」+ pass「通る」からなる複合語で、pass は古フランス語 passer、さらに俗ラテン語 passare に由来します。passage や surpass と同根で、「上を通り抜ける道」だから高架橋になる、という像がそのまま意味になっています。
Overpass is built from English over and pass. Pass came into English through Old French passer, from Vulgar Latin passare, meaning "to go through" or "step across." The word first suggested a way that goes over something, and that physical idea became the modern sense of a road or bridge crossing above another route.
