道路や鉄道が地下を通る通路のことです。街中の交差点や線路を越える際に使われる地下の通路を指します。
An underpass is a passage or road that goes under another road, railway, or bridge. People use it to cross safely or to let traffic move without stopping.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
under + pass で「下を通って抜ける場所」と分解すると覚えやすいです。pass は passport や passage の pass と同じで「通る」。その通り道が under にあるので地下道。対で overpass「上をまたぐ通路」を置くと位置関係が固定されます。tunnel は長いトンネル全般にも使えますが、underpass は特に道路や線路の下をくぐる通路の感じ。street underpass, railway underpass の場面を頭に置くと定着しやすいです。
