paroxysmal は paroxysm「発作」に -al が付いた形容詞です。paroxysm はギリシャ語 paroxysmos「激しい刺激」にさかのぼり、para-「越えて」+ oxys「鋭い」から成ります。oxygen の oxy- も同根で、「鋭さが急に高まる」感覚から発作性の意味になりました。
`Paroxysmal` comes from `paroxysm` plus the adjective ending `-al`. `Paroxysm` goes back to Greek `paroxysmos`, from parts meaning roughly "to sharpen greatly" or "to make more intense," built from `para-` and `oxys` meaning "sharp."
