低賃金で単純労働に従事する労働者。もとはラテンアメリカで債務により束縛された農業労働者を指した。
A peon is a worker with very low status, usually doing simple, low-paid, or hard labor. In modern informal English, it can also mean someone with little power, but this use can sound disrespectful.

peon はスペイン語 peón「日雇い労働者」からで、さらに中世ラテン語 pedonem「徒歩の兵士」にさかのぼります。語根は ped-「足」で、pedestrian や pawn と親類なので、“歩いて働く下層の人”から今の意味になった語です。
Peon came into English from Spanish peon, meaning a laborer or foot soldier. It goes back to Medieval Latin pedonem and ultimately to a root meaning "foot," which also appears in pedestrian. The idea seems to have moved from someone who goes on foot to a low-ranking worker or subordinate person.
