文の一部で、意味を持つ小さな言葉や単語の組み合わせのことです。完全な文ではなく、一定の意味を持つ単語の組み合わせを表します。
A phrase is a small group of words that go together as a unit. It is often used in speaking and writing to express one idea, but it may not be a complete sentence. The word can also refer to a common or special expression.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
phrase は sentence と対比すると覚えやすいです。sentence は主語・動詞までそろった完結した「文」ですが、phrase は意味のかたまりではあっても文としては未完成。word 1語よりは大きく、sentence よりは小さい中間サイズの表現です。noun phrase, verb phrase のように文法でも頻出で、key phrase, set phrase, useful phrase など実用表現でもよく見ます。つづりが似た phase（段階）と混同しないよう注意すると定着します。
Remember it by comparing it with `word` and `sentence`. A `phrase` is bigger than one word but smaller than a full sentence. Be careful not to mix it up with `phase`, which has a different spelling and meaning.

phrase が動詞のときは、考えや気持ち、質問などを、ある言葉づかいで表現することをいう。内容そのものよりも「どう言うか」に焦点があり、丁寧に言い換えたり、相手に伝わりやすい形で文を組み立てたりする場面でよく使う。書き言葉にも話し言葉にも使える。

phrase を動詞で使うときは、「フレーズそのもの」ではなく、その内容をどう言葉に組み立てるかを表します。She phrased her question carefully. なら、質問を慎重な言い方に整えたということ。sentence と比べる名詞の「句」ではなく、put into words に近い「言い表す」と切り分けると覚えやすいです。rephrase「言い換える」も、同じく言い方を作り直す動きです。つづりが似た phase（段階）と混同しないよう注意すると定着します。

phrase はギリシャ語 phrasis「言い方・表現」が、ラテン語を経てフランス語 phrase から英語に入った語です。語根は phrazein「告げる、言葉にする」で、“言い表したひとかたまり”という感覚から今の意味になりました。関連語は rephrase, paraphrase です。
