古代ギリシャ語peiratēs（襲撃者）を語源とするラテン語pirataに由来する。接尾辞-edが付き「海賊が武力で奪った」の意から転じ、権利者の許可なく無断で複製・配布された状態を指す。pirateやpiracyも同根語。
Pirated is formed by adding the past-participle ending -ed to pirate. Pirate came through Latin pirata from Greek peiratēs, “raider or attacker.” The word first referred to robbery at sea and later became a verb for taking or reproducing protected material without authorization. The participle pirated consequently developed its common adjectival use for illegally copied software, films, music, and other copyrighted works.
