pogrom は、特定の民族や宗教集団を標的にした組織的な襲撃・虐殺・迫害を指す名詞です。とくに東欧やロシアで起きたユダヤ人迫害について使われることが多いですが、広く少数集団への暴力的な弾圧を表す場合にも用いられます。
A pogrom is an organized violent attack on a particular ethnic, religious, or social group. The word is especially used in historical and political contexts about mass persecution or killings. It has a very strong and serious meaning.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず「偶発的な暴動」ではなく、標的が最初から決まった集団的襲撃だと押さえると定着しやすい語。歴史文脈では anti-Jewish pogroms の形で出やすく、massacre や persecution に近いが、少数民族・宗教集団を狙って町ぐるみ、あるいは当局黙認で起こる迫害の響きが強い。riot より重く、genocide ほど全面的でなくても使える。program と見間違えず、「標的化された虐殺・迫害」の英語として覚える。
Be careful not to confuse `pogrom` with `program` because they look similar. Use this memory hook instead: `pogrom` often appears in history writing about attacks aimed at one specific group. It is stronger and more targeted than a simple `riot`.
