Etymology
Poncho entered English through Spanish poncho, the name of the characteristic sleeveless outer garment associated especially with South America. It is often traced to an Indigenous American language, with Quechua punchu frequently proposed, although the deeper history is not completely certain. The word traveled with the garment and has retained its concrete meaning: a broad outer covering with an opening through which the wearer places the head.
