鳥がくちばしで羽を整える羽繕いのこと。転じて、人が鏡の前で髪や服装を念入りに整えることや、自分の外見や出来栄えに満足して得意げに振る舞うことも表す。動物の習性にも、人のうぬぼれた態度にも使われる語である。
