pretence はラテン語 praetendere「前に差し出す、口実を述べる」が古フランス語経由で入った語です。pre-「前に」+ tendere「伸ばす」で、tension や extend と同根。理由を前に差し出す感覚が「見せかけ・ふり」へ変わりました。
