本当の目的や理由を隠すための見かけ上の理由や口実。真の意図を覆い隠すために言い張られる言い訳。
Pretexts are false or weak reasons used to hide the real reason for doing something. This word is often used when someone is making an excuse to justify an action or avoid saying the truth directly.

pretext は「本音を隠すために、先に出す表向きの説明」として覚えると定着しやすい。pre- は preview, predict などと同じく「前に」の感覚。単なる excuse よりも、「別の狙いがあるのに、それを隠してもっともらしい理由を出す」という含みが強い。under the pretext of ...（…を口実に）, use A as a pretext for B の形で見ると使い方も一緒に覚えられる。pretexts はその複数形で、正当な理由というより“見せかけの理由”だと意識するとよい。
