react は act「行動する」に re- がついて、「何かを受けて動き返す」と考えると覚えやすい。単独で動くより、外からの出来事に引っぱられて起こる反応を表す語で、react to the news, react to criticism, react to the medicine のように目的語の前に必ず to を置く。respond to よりも、とっさ・感情的・身体的な反応に寄りやすいのが特徴。reaction も一緒に覚えると意味のまとまりができ、to を落とさないようセットで定着させやすい。
