reactionary は reaction に -ary が付いた語で、reaction はラテン語 re-「後ろへ」+ actio「行為」に由来します。変化に対して前進ではなく“押し返す行為”へ向かう感じが、反動的という意味を生みました。active や actor も同じ agere 系です。
Reactionary comes from reaction plus the suffix -ary. Reaction comes from Latin re- "back" and actio, from agere, "to do" or "to drive." The word developed from the idea of acting back against something, and then took on the sense of pushing against change; active and actor are from the same root family.
