ラテン語 recitare（re-「再び」+ citare「呼び出す、引用する」）に由来。声に出して読み上げることが原義。関連語に cite（引用する）、excite（興奮させる＝外に呼び出す）がある。「再び声に出して呼ぶ」から朗読・暗唱の意味が生まれた。
