Recognizance is a legal promise, often supported by money or a formal agreement, that someone will do something such as appear in court. It is mainly used in legal contexts and is not common in everyday conversation.

recognizance は古フランス語経由で、ラテン語 recognoscere「再び知る・認める」に由来します。re-「再び」+ cognoscere「知る」で、recognize や cognition と同根です。法廷で「その義務を正式に認める」ことが、誓約保証金の意味につながりました。
Recognizance came into English through Old French from Latin recognoscere, meaning "to know again" or "to acknowledge." It is built from re- "again" and cognoscere "to know," the same root seen in recognize and cognition. In legal use, the idea shifted from simply acknowledging something to formally admitting an obligation before a court.
