referent は refer＋-ent「…するもの」から成る。refer はラテン語 re-「戻して」＋ ferre「運ぶ」で、reference や transfer も同じ根をもち、「言葉が意味を運んでいく先」と捉えると、指示対象の意味が腑に落ちる。
