覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず中核はよく知る動詞 relax。「くつろぐ」だけでなく「緩める」の感覚を持つと、relaxant は「緩めるもの」と見えて覚えやすいです。語尾 -ant は assistant などと同じく「その働きをするもの」。医療では特に muscle relaxants の形でよく出て、筋肉の緊張をゆるめる薬を指します。sleeping pills や sedatives は眠気・鎮静寄りですが、relaxants は“緊張をほどく”ことが中心、という違いで整理すると残りやすいです。
Start from the familiar verb `relax`, but think of its wider sense: not only "rest," but also "loosen." The ending `-ant` often means "a thing that does this," so a `relaxant` is something that loosens tension. It often appears in the phrase `muscle relaxants`, which is a strong memory hook.

relaxants の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 relaxare(緩める)から。re-(再び)+ laxare(緩める)が語根で、lax(緩い)と同源。動詞 relax に薬剤を示す接尾辞 -ant が付いた形の複数形。laxative(下剤)も同じ語根 laxus を持つ。
Relaxants comes from relaxant, based on relax, from Latin relaxare "to loosen." It combines re- with laxare, from laxus "loose," the same root seen in lax and laxative. The meaning developed from the general idea of loosening or easing tension to the noun use for things that cause relaxation.
