「reprieved」は reprieve の過去分詞で、語源は古フランス語 reprendre「取り戻す・連れ戻す」にさかのぼります。死刑執行の代わりに「牢へ戻す」ことから猶予の意味が育ったので、単なる延期でなく処罰をいったん差し戻す感じが見えます。関連語はreprise、reprisal。
Reprieved comes from reprieve, which developed from Old French reprendre, meaning "take back" or "bring back." In legal use, it referred to sending someone back to prison instead of carrying out a punishment at once. From that, the meaning became a delay or temporary relief from punishment.
