住すんでいた

解説 Definition

resided は reside「住む・居住する」の過去形・過去分詞です。ある場所に住んでいたことを表す、やや改まった語です。

Lived in a particular place for a period of time, especially in formal, historical, or official language. It is the past form of reside and is commonly followed by in, at, or another expression of location.

使い方 Usage

  • 場所は resided in Kyoto、resided near the lake、resided at the property などの形で表します。 Add a location phrase, as in resided in Kyoto, resided near the lake, or resided at the property.
  • for five years「5年間」や during the summer「夏の間」を添えて、居住していた期間を表せます。 Add for five years or during the summer to describe the period of residence.

使い分け Common distinctions

  • lived より改まった響きがあり、伝記・記録・公的な説明などで使われます。 Resided sounds more formal than lived and is used in biographies, records, and official descriptions.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

reside は語末が e なので、-d を付けて resided にします。語尾は /ɪd/ と発音します。「腰を落ち着けて居住していた」という場面と結び付けて覚えましょう。

Reside ends in e, so add only -d to form resided. The ending is pronounced /ɪd/. Picture someone settled and living in a place, rather than merely visiting it.

resided の語源・成り立ち Etymology

resided は reside の過去形・過去分詞で、古フランス語 resider を経てラテン語 residere「座る・とどまる」に由来します。re-「後ろに・再び」+ sedere「座る」から、「腰を落ち着けてそこにいる」感覚が「住んでいた」につながります。関連語は resident, residence。

Resided is the regular past and past-participle form of reside. Reside came through French from Latin residere, “to remain behind or sit down,” formed from re- and sedere, “to sit.” The sense of staying settled in one place developed into the formal meaning “to live somewhere.” Resident and residence come from the same Latin base and preserve the connection with dwelling in a place.
