ラテン語 resumere（re-=再び + sumere=取る）が古フランス語 resumer を経て英語に入った。「再び手に取る」が原義で、中断したものを再び始める意味になった。関連語：assume（引き受ける）、consume（消費する）。同じ語根 sumere は「取る」を意味する。
