中英語 saffron は古フランス語 safran、さらに中世ラテン語 safranum、アラビア語 za'faran にさかのぼる借用語です。香辛料名がそのまま黄橙色名にもなった語で、関連語に saffrony・safranine があり、「サフラン色」から意味がつかめます。
English saffron came through Middle English and Old French safran, with related Medieval Latin forms such as safranum. These forms ultimately trace back to Arabic zaʿfarān, the name of the spice. The name was borrowed along with the valuable culinary and coloring material traded across regions. Because the spice produces a recognizable golden yellow-orange dye, saffron naturally also became an English color term.
