sayは古英語secgan（言う）、againは古英語ongēan（反対に・再び）が語源。againのgainはゲルマン語で「向かって」の意で、「もう一度向き合って言う」が原義。関連語：against（対抗して）、gainsay（否定する）。再度の発話を求める直接的な表現。
"Say" comes from Old English "secgan," meaning to speak or tell. "Again" comes from Old English "ongen" or "ongean," which first meant "back" or "in return" before it developed the sense of "once more."
