解説 Definition
地質学で、水や風が運んだ粒子が堆積してできた岩石や層を指します。粉体や微粒子が積み重なって固まった状態を表す言葉でもあります。
Sedimentary describes rock or material that is formed from small pieces of earth, sand, or dead plants and animals that settle in layers over time. It is mainly used in geology and earth science. The word often appears in phrases like "sedimentary rock."
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
sedimentary は sediment（堆積物）が見えればかなり覚えやすい語。まず「細かい粒が水底に settle して、何層にも積み重なる」場面を頭に固定すると、sedimentary rock / layer / basin が一気につながる。地学では igneous（火成岩）や metamorphic（変成岩）と対比して、「熱や圧力で変わった岩ではなく、運ばれた粒が積もってできた岩」という位置づけで整理すると混同しにくい。語尾 -ary は「〜に関する」で、名詞 sediment からできた形容詞と見れば覚えやすい。

sedimentary は sediment「堆積物」＋ -ary「〜に関する」。sediment はラテン語 sedere「座る」から出た sedimentum に由来し、粒子が『座るように下へ落ち着く』感覚が核。sedate や sedentary も同根で、動かず落ち着くイメージが意味を支える。
Sedimentary comes from sediment + the adjective suffix -ary. Sediment comes from Latin sedimentum, from sedere, meaning "to sit," with the idea of matter settling down as if it were sitting. The same root appears in sedentary and sedate, and the meaning developed from physical settling to the idea of material laid down in layers.
