古フランス語 golfe、イタリア語 golfo を経てギリシャ語 kolpos（胸・湾・ふところ）に由来。海が陸地の懐に入り込む地形から「湾」の意となり、そこから比喩的に「大きな隔たり・溝」の意味が生まれた。関連語: engulf（飲み込む）。
