解説 Definition

shies は動詞 shy の三人称単数現在形で、人が怖さやためらいから尻込みして避けることを表します。馬などが驚いて横へよける動きにも使います。

Shies is the third-person singular present form of shy. It describes an animal, especially a horse, suddenly moving aside in fear, or a person avoiding something because of nervousness, reluctance, or lack of confidence.

使い方 Usage

  • he、she、it や単数の名詞を主語にして、現在の習慣的な行動などを述べるときに shies を使います。 Use shies with he, she, it, or a singular noun as the subject to describe present habitual behavior, for example.
  • 人については shies away from +名詞・動名詞で、怖さやためらいから何かを避けることを表します。 For people, shies away from followed by a noun or an -ing form describes avoiding something through fear or reluctance.
  • 馬などについては、驚いて急に横へよける動きを表します。 For animals, especially horses, shies describes suddenly moving sideways in fear.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

shy は子音字+y で終わるため、y を i に替えて -es を付けると shies になります。発音は shy /ʃaɪ/、shies /ʃaɪz/。ためらって身を引く姿と結び付けて覚えます。

Shy ends in a consonant plus y, so change y to i and add -es: shy becomes shies. Compare /ʃaɪ/ with /ʃaɪz/, and picture someone drawing back in hesitation.

例文

She shies away from speaking in public.

彼女は人前で話すことに尻込みします。

The colt shies when a plastic bag blows across the road.

ビニール袋が道路を横切って飛んでくると、その子馬は驚いて横へよけます。

shies の語源・成り立ち Etymology

shies は動詞 shy の三人称単数形で、この shy は中英語 shy、さらに古英語 sceoh「臆病な・驚きやすい」にさかのぼります。もとは馬などが「びくっと横へよける」感覚で、そこから人にも「尻込みする・避ける」が広がりました。関連語に shy、shyness があります。

Shies is formed regularly from the verb shy by replacing final y with i and adding -es. Shy passed through Middle English and is related to Old English scēoh, meaning timid, fearful, or easily frightened. The verbal sense developed especially from the behavior of horses that start or move suddenly aside in alarm. It later broadened to describe people who avoid or draw back from something.
