subject to
〜を条件として
解説 Definition
「subject to」はある条件や規則の支配下に置かれることを示す前置詞句です。契約書や公式な案内で使われ、先行する条件が満たされない限り後続の約束が成り立たないことを明確にします。
Subject to means controlled by, affected by, or required to follow something such as a rule, condition, or decision. It is common in formal English, especially in law, business, and official notices. The exact meaning depends on the noun that follows, such as regulations, approval, or change.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
subject は school subject の「科目」よりも、「何かの支配や条件の下にある対象」という感覚でつかむと subject to が覚えやすいです。句全体で「〜のもとで」「〜次第で」「〜に従って」。subject to change, subject to approval, subject to the rules のように、後ろの条件や規則に左右される場面で頻出します。be under に近いですが、subject to のほうが契約書や案内文で使う硬い表現。to の後ろは名詞が来やすく、動詞の原形ではない点も混同しないようにすると定着します。
Remember this as a formal pattern: `be subject to` plus a noun such as `rules`, `the law`, or `tax`. The image is being under the control of something, not simply choosing to follow it. That is why it sounds more official than `obey`, and why `to` is followed by a noun, not a verb.
例文

subject to の語源・成り立ち Etymology
subjectはラテン語subiectus(sub-「下に」+iacere「投げる」)に由来し、「下に置かれた→支配下にある」が原義。inject(注入)やproject(投影)も同じiacere語根。subject toは「~の支配下に置かれる→~に従う」という服従の意味を保っている。
Subject comes from Latin subiectus, from sub- "under" and iacere "to throw." The original image was something "thrown under" or placed beneath another power, so it came to mean being under control or authority. In subject to, that older sense remains in the idea of being under the influence, rule, or condition of something. Related words from the same root include project and inject.
