copse は coppice の短縮形で、古フランス語 copeiz「伐って管理する林」、さらに俗ラテン語系の語にさかのぼります。芯にあるのは「切る・一打」の感覚で、定期的に伐って育てる小林を指したため、今の「雑木林」の意味につながります。関連語は coppice、coup。
Copse is a shortened form of coppice. Coppice came through Old French from a late Latin source connected with cutting or striking. Because this kind of woodland was regularly cut back and managed, the word shifted from the act of cutting to the small wood itself. Related words include coppice and coup.
