覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

snack「軽食を取る」に -ing を付けた動名詞で、語幹は変化せず、snacking は「間食すること」です。snacking between meals、late-night snacking、healthy snacking の組み合わせで覚えましょう。meal がまとまった食事なのに対し、snacking は食間に少量を気軽に食べる行為を表します。

Connect snacking with the base word snack and simply add -ing; the spelling of the base does not change. A snack is smaller and less formal than a meal, so snacking means eating small amounts, commonly between regular meals. Fix the idea through frequent combinations: snacking between meals, late-night snacking, healthy snacking, and reduce snacking. Picture someone taking a piece of fruit or a few crackers without sitting down for a full meal. The word often appears in discussions of daily habits, nutrition, sleep, and weight rather than a single formal dining occasion.

snacking の語源・成り立ち Etymology

中世オランダ語の「snacken(素早くかじる)」に由来し、動詞snackに名詞化接尾辞-ingが付きました。食事の間に急いで「ぱくつく」行為から転じ、軽い「間食」を意味するようになりました。同じ語源を持つsnap(かみつく)と関連します。

Snacking is formed from snack and the action-forming suffix -ing. Snack entered English with senses involving a snap, bite, or small share and is probably related to Middle Dutch snacken, meaning to snap at or bite. The noun later came to mean a small amount of food eaten quickly, and the verb developed from it. Snacking therefore names the repeated or general activity of eating such small portions, especially between meals.
