stockholder は stock + holder で、そのまま「株を持っている人」と分けると覚えやすいです。holder は cardholder, ticket holder などでも出る「保持者」。つまり unknown 語でも holder が見えれば「何かを持つ人」と当たりがつきます。shareholder もほぼ同義ですが、share は「持ち分」、stock は「株式」寄りの語感。major stockholder「大株主」、stockholder meeting「株主総会」などの形で、会社の所有・議決・配当の場面と一緒に覚えると定着します。stakeholder と混同しないこと。

Stockholder is a compound of stock and holder. Stock comes from Old English stocc, originally meaning a tree trunk or solid stem, then later a stored supply or main source, and from there capital or shares. So a stockholder is literally a person who holds stock, with the financial sense growing out of the older idea of a basic store or resource.
