解説 Definition
スツールとは、背もたれや肘かけのない一人用の座席（椅子）のことである。バーカウンターや台所のカウンターで使われる背の高いバースツールや、ピアノの前に置かれる低いスツールなど、さまざまな用途と高さのものがある。また、医療用語では便（糞便）を指すこともある。

古英語stol「座るための席・玉座」が語源で、さらにゲルマン祖語*stolaz、印欧祖語*sta-「立つ」にさかのぼります。standやドイツ語Stuhlと同根で、「しっかり立つ台」から背もたれのない腰掛けを指すようになりました。
Stool comes from Old English stōl, meaning a seat, chair, or throne. It is inherited from a Germanic source also represented by German Stuhl and is ultimately associated with the Indo-European root commonly reconstructed as sta-, “to stand.” The historical image is therefore a seat or platform standing firmly on its supports. The specialized medical meaning developed separately through the use of stool for a privy seat and then for excrement.
