無精ひげ
解説 Definition
無精ひげとは、数日間剃らずに放置した顎や頬に生えた短い毛のことです。完全な髭ではなく、短く粗い毛が点在するような状態を指します。
Stubble is short hair that starts to grow on a man's face after shaving. It usually appears after one or a few days without shaving. The word can also refer to short stalks left in a field after crops are cut, but facial hair is the more common meaning.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
stub「短く残った先・切り株」を知っていると覚えやすい。stubble は、shave したあとに skin から短くチクチク突き出た毛が一面に残る感じで、整った beard ではなく“剃り残しのざらつき”を指す。よく beard stubble, his face was covered in stubble の形で出る。mustache は口ひげ、beard はしっかりしたひげ、stubble は数日放置した短い無精ひげ、と対比すると定着しやすい。
Think of `stub`, something short left behind after cutting. `Stubble` is the short, rough hair left after shaving, not a full beard. Compare them this way: `mustache` is above the lip, `beard` is full facial hair, and `stubble` is the short prickly stage in between.

stubble の語源・成り立ち Etymology
stubble は古フランス語 estoble、さらにラテン語 stipula「わら・茎」に由来し、もとは刈り取り後に残る短い茎のことでした。そこから顔に残る短く硬い毛にも使われるようになり、stub や stipule にも近い「短く突き出た残り」の感覚が見えます。
Stubble came through Old French from Latin stipula, meaning straw or stalk. It first referred to the short stalks left in a field after crops were cut. Later, the same image of short stiff remains was applied to the small rough hairs left on a man's face after shaving. It is related in sense to words like stub, which also suggest something short and left over.
