Subhuman means less than fully human in quality, value, or development. It can describe something imagined as below normal human level, but it is also a very offensive word when used about people. Use it with care because it strongly dehumanizes others.

human が「人間」、sub- が subway, submarine, subtitle などにある「下・下位」の感覚だと押さえると、「人間の基準より下」という形で覚えやすい。superhuman（人間離れした）と対にすると定着する。意味はかなり強く侮蔑的で、知性や品格が人間以下だと切り捨てる語。日常の軽い悪口ではなく、差別や非人間化を語る文脈で見かけやすい点にも注意。

subhuman はラテン語 sub-「下に」+ human「人の」から成る語です。submarine や subordinate と同じ sub- が「下位」の感覚を加えるので、語の形だけで「人間の水準より下」が見えてきます。そこから、人間らしさに欠ける・人間以下のという意味になりました。
