Etymology
Surmised comes from surmise plus the past-tense ending -d. Surmise entered English through Old French surmise, a form related to surmettre, “to place upon,” from sur-, “over or upon,” and mettre, “to put.” The historical idea of placing something on top of what is known developed into that of adding an interpretation or supposition, and hence forming a judgment without complete proof.
