A system is an organized set of connected parts, rules, or methods that work together for a particular purpose. It can refer to technology, an institution, a natural arrangement, or an established way of doing something.

Think of a system as several parts working together as one organized whole. The word’s Greek structure carries the idea of things being placed or made to stand together. This fits a computer system, where hardware and software cooperate, but the English word is much broader. A transport system connects routes and vehicles; a filing system organizes documents; and a legal system combines institutions and rules. Whenever you see system, ask what the parts are, how they are connected, and what purpose they serve. That “parts working together” picture is the central memory link.

ギリシャ語 σύστημα（systēma、組み合わされたもの）に由来。σύν（syn-共に）+ ἵστημι（histēmi 立てる）が語根で、「共に立てられたもの」が原義。関連語：systematic（体系的な）、ecosystem（生態系）。部品が組み合わさって機能する全体像を表す。
System comes through Latin systema from Greek systēma, meaning an organized whole or something composed of connected parts. The Greek word is related to syn-, “together,” and histēmi, “to cause to stand.” Its literal structure therefore suggests things placed together. English adopted the word for organized bodies of ideas or principles and later extended it to technical, social, biological, and procedural arrangements. This same structure appears in words such as systematic and ecosystem.
