tanager はポルトガル語 tangará 経由で入り、さらにブラジル先住民語トゥピ語 tagará にさかのぼる借用語です。接頭辞などの分解はしにくいですが、Tangara という属名や tangara 形に同じ根が残り、「土地の鳥名がそのまま英語名になった」と見ると意味の来歴が見えます。
Tanager entered English through Portuguese tangará. It ultimately comes from Tupi, an Indigenous language of Brazil, where tagará was the bird's local name. The word was borrowed as a whole rather than built from parts in English, and the same root appears in the bird genus name Tangara.
