法律・規則・手続きなどの細かい条項や、内容の本質ではなく形式や解釈の細部に関わる問題を指す語。とくに、そうした細かな点を理由に判決や決定が左右される場合に用いられ、「重箱の隅」のような響きを持つこともある。
