何かを追い求める人、または目的の所在を探す能力を持つ人を指します。化学物質の移動を追跡するために使う標識化合物としても使われます。さらに、銃弾の軌道を視認する目的で付けられる発光弾のことも指します。

tracerはtrace+-erで「跡をたどる人・物」です。traceは古フランス語経由でラテン語trahere「引く」につながり、もとは線を引いて跡を残す感覚なので、追跡は残された線を読むことだとわかります。attractやextractも同じ語根です。
Tracer is made from trace plus the suffix -er, meaning "a person or thing that traces." Trace came through Old French and goes back to Latin trahere, "to pull" or "draw." The original image is of drawing a line or leaving a track, which later led to the idea of following one.
