A transcriptome is the complete set of RNA molecules produced in a cell or group of cells at a certain time. Scientists study it to understand which genes are active under different conditions. The word is mainly used in genetics and molecular biology.

transcriptome は trans-「越えて」+ script「書く」+ -ome「全体」から成る現代科学語。script はラテン語 scribere 由来で manuscript や describe と同根、DNA 情報が RNA に書き写された総体だと分かる。
Transcriptome is a modern scientific coinage made from transcript and -ome, meaning a complete set or whole. Transcript comes from Latin trans-, "across," and scribere, "to write," so the base idea is something written or copied across. The word was formed for the full set of RNA copies made from genetic information; script, describe, and manuscript share the same Latin root.
