解説 Definition
turn up は、人が会合や場所に現れること、なくした物が思いがけず見つかること、機械や音楽などの音量・火力・程度を上げることを表す句動詞。日常会話で非常によく使われ、文脈によって意味が大きく変わる。

turn は古フランス語 tourner、さらにラテン語 tornare「旋盤で回す」にさかのぼり、up は古英語で「上へ・表へ」。進路がこちらへ回って視界に上がるイメージから turn up は「ひょっこり現れる」になった。同根語に return, overturn がある。
